It became her home in 1942, and nothing enchanted her more than watching the sea from the porch of Hammersmith Farm. The city by the sea was her peaceful oasis, where she found refuge when tragedies struck and the comfort of nostalgic times shared with family and loved ones. She married John F. Kennedy in a resplendent ceremony at St. Mary’s Church, a celebration of love which still echoes across the decades. Hammersmith Farm became the Kennedy’s happy retreat and summer white house providing the privacy she so craved for her and her family. The town holds dear memories of Jackie and her beloved family and each summer St. Mary’s continues to celebrate the wedding of Jackie and Jack. Amidst the American castle of Newport, where celebrity sightings and formal affairs are par for the course, Jacqueline shone brightest. Viewers of The Office fell in love with the character and grew to love the actor who played him even more. Rainn founded a website and media company, SoulPancake, that eventually became a bestselling book of the same name. He also started a hilarious Twitter feed (sample tweet: “I'm not on Facebook” is the new “I don't even own a TV”) that now has more than four million followers. Now, he's ready to tell his own story and explain how he came up with his incredibly unique sense of humor and perspective on life. He explains how he grew up “bone-numbingly nerdy before there was even a modicum of cool attached to the word.” The Bassoon King chronicles his journey from nerd to drama geek (“the highest rung on the vast, pimply ladder of high school losers”), his years of mild debauchery and struggles as a young actor in New York, his many adventures and insights about The Office, and finally, Wilson's achievement of success and satisfaction, both in his career and spiritually, reconnecting with the artistic and creative values of the Bahá’í faith he grew up in.Review"Quirky, witty, literate."-The Washington Post"Rainn Wilson's memoir captures the essence of his offbeat humor."-Chicago Sun-Times“Wilson defies the typical tropes of celebrity memoir. At points, The Bassoon King’s episodes read with the comparably startling, surreal and yet downright endearing outrageousness of an Augusten Burroughs or even David Sedaris essay. . . . This alarming official figure reveals a national tragedy and the systemic failure of law enforcement and of all levels of government to address the issue.Journalist Emmanuelle Walter spent two years investigating this crisis and has crafted a moving representative account of the disappearance of two young women, Maisy Odjick and Shannon Alexander, teenagers from western Quebec, who have been missing since September 2008. When Jonathan Pitts took his wife of 15 years into his arms for their anniversary dance, he had no idea that within a month he would be on a completely different journey, navigating life after Wynter's sudden death at the age of 38. One moment he was married to a successful author and magazine publisher, and putting the finishing touches on their book about marriage. The next he was a widower and a single father of four grieving daughters. Without warning, the future his family had planned together dissolved, leaving Jonathan trying to answer the question that echoed through his daughters’ hearts and his own: How could a loving God allow this unspeakable loss? My Wynter Season is Jonathan’s story of losing the most wonderful gift he had ever been given and his journey toward understanding life without her. Yet in the wilderness of his grief, Jonathan found himself surrounded by God’s extravagant love, and came to truly understand Christ’s life-giving promise that death is not the end. Review “I met Jonathan at the funeral of his wife and my friend, Wynter. Since that day, I have watched him carry his weight of grief and sorrow with such grace, wisdom, and vulnerability. These words are ones that he has lived and ones that he is offering to us all as a balm to our own grief. Jonathan pushes us all toward Jesus and the hope that only He can provide through these words, and I do not doubt that when I walk through my next season of grief, these words will be a guide for me. You will know more about Wynter as you read this book, but most importantly, you will learn more about Jesus―the one we are all clinging to throughout our lives.”―Jamie Ivey, podcast host, bestselling author“Jonathan Pitts’ honest, captivating, and riveting story will move your heart. His resolve and steady faith will be sure to encourage you through whatever ‘Wynter season’ you are facing.”―Anthony Evans, worship leader, recording artist“This man and this message will change your life. I’m convinced of this because they’ve both changed mine. Jonathan Pitts built a beautiful life with my cousin and best friend, Wynter, before it was cut short by her sudden death. In these pages, he shares their story with an openness and vulnerability that will not only grip your soul but will guide you as you walk through difficulties of your own. Each page shimmers with the kind of integrity and strength that can only be shaped through brokenness, cleansed by tears, and forged by fire. This is legacy on paper. Read it. And then pass it along to someone else. You’ll be glad you did.”―Priscilla Shirer, Bible teacher, author"In My Wynter Season, Jonathan Pitts shares his very personal experience of loving Wynter, learning from Wynter, and living through the most painful and piercing time in his life as a husband wrestling with the loss of his wife. Jonathan shares an honest and detailed account of his life with Wynter and his journey through a winter season without her. His story will rivet you but, more importantly, his revelations will guide you to a place of peace, helping you to see and believe that God can use each season of your life for His glory and your good.”―Chrystal Evans Hurst, sister-cousin, author, speaker “Even during the darkest days of grief, Jonathan shares the peace, strength, and hope he and his family have found in the Lord. Macdonald at 200 presents fifteen fresh interpretations of Canada’s founding Prime Minister, published for the occasion of the bicentennial of his birth in 1815. Well researched and crisply written by recognized scholars and specialists, the collection throws new light on Macdonald’s formative role in shaping government, promoting women’s rights, managing the nascent economy, supervising westward expansion, overseeing relations with Native peoples, and dealing with Fenian terrorism. A special section deals with how Macdonald has (or has not) been remembered by historians as well as the general public. The book concludes with an afterword by prominent Macdonald biographer Richard Gwyn. Macdonald emerges as a man of full dimensions - an historical figure that is surprisingly relevant to our own times. I will not... recant! Here I stand." This authoritative and inspiring story paints a vivid portrait of the crusader who spearheaded the Reformation. Considered one of the most readable biographies of Martin Luther, this volume is an illustrated look at the German religious reformer and his influence on Western civilization.Martin Luther entered a monastery as a youth and as a man shattered the structure of the medieval church. Luther spoke out against the corrupt religious practices that then existed. His demand that the authority for doctrine and practice be Scriptures, rather than Popes or Councils, echoed around the world and ignited the Great Reformation. Accused of heresy and threatened with excommunication and death, Luther maintained his bold stand and refused to recant. In his crusade to eliminate religious abuses, he did more than any other man to establish the Protestant faith. With sound historical scholarship and penetrating insight, Roland Bainton examines Luther's widespread influence. He re-creates the spiritual setting of the sixteenth century, showing Luther's place within it and influence upon it. Richly illustrated with more than 100 woodcuts and engravings from Luther's own time, Here I Stand dramatically brings to life Martin Luther, the great reformer.Bainton published Here I Stand: A Life of Martin Luther in 1950. As of 2008, it is still in print. Kenneth Scott Latourette, in the chapter notes for "Luther and the Rise and Spread of Lutheranism" in his History of Christianity, lauds Bainton's biography of Luther as "A superb combination of accurate scholarship based upon a thorough knowledge of the sources and secondary works with insight, vivid, readable literary style, and reproductions of contemporary illustrations. It also contains so valuable a bibliography as to render needless an extended one in this chapter." In his chapter on Luther's writings in Invitation to the Classics, Mark A. From Library Journal In traditional Catholic religious imagination, members of the community of the redeemed can rely on other members to assist them and to compensate for their shortcomings. This is at the heart of the doctrine of patron saints that forms the basis for this book. The authors provide an engaging if sophomoric romp through each day of the Catholic calendar, which commemorates a saint's "birthday" into heaven and thus assigns a saint's feast to virtually every day of the year. National Lampoon editor Kelly and Rogers, also coauthors of Saints Preserve Us! and Who in Hell , have constructed a book in which Animal House meets the Roman martyrology and in which readers are offered a loving, albeit often irreverently reductionist, hagiography. The book may prove to be wildly popular with many Catholics and their middle-aged clergy but will not be as accessible or attractive to those who have not been brought up within the practices of Catholicism. And it certainly is not a book that Catholic schoolteachers should use to inspire devotion to the saints among their young charges. Few people realize that the facts of his life make for a much better tale. This harrowing tale traces Kidd's voyages in the 1690s from his home near Wall Street to Whitehall Palace in London, from the ports of the Caribbean to a secret pirate paradise off Madagascar. Author Richard Zacks, during his research, also unearthed the story of a long forgotten rogue named Robert Culliford, who dogged Kidd and led Kidd's crew to mutiny not once but twice. Marthe, using her perfect German accent and blond hair to pose as a young German nurse who was desperately trying to obtain word of a fictional fiancé, would slip behind enemy lines to retrieve inside information about Nazi troop movements. By traveling throughout the countryside and approaching troops sympathetic to her plight--risking death every time she did so--she learned where they were going next and was able to alert Allied commanders. When, at the age of eighty, Marthe Cohn was awarded France’s highest military honor, the Médaille Militaire, not even her children knew to what extent this modest woman had helped defeat the Nazi empire. At its heart, this remarkable memoir is the tale of an ordinary human being who, under extraordinary circumstances, became the hero her country needed her to be. Review “This compelling memoir is a testament to how extraordinary circumstances can transform a life-and how an extraordinary person reacts to difficult circumstances. What comes through is the importance of courageous individual action in the most dire situations. This is the amazing story of a woman who lived through one of the worst times in human history, losing family members to the Nazis but surviving with her spirit and integrity intact.” -Publishers Weekly From the Back Cover Marthe Cohn was in her late teens when Hitler was rising to power. Living across the German border in Alsace-Lorraine, her family began taking in Jews who were fleeing the Nazis, as well as the Jewish children being sent away by terrified parents. Soon her own homeland was under Nazi rule, and she and her parents, brothers, and sisters were forced to live the restricted lives of all Jews. As the Nazi occupation of France escalated along with the war, Marthe's sister was arrested and eventually sent to Auschwitz, and the rest of her family was forced to flee to the south of France. Always a fighter, Marthe joined the French Army. Behind Enemy Lines is Marthe Cohn's memoir of a time and place that has mesmerized the world for more than half a century. But at its heart it is the tale of an ordinary human being who, under extraordinary circumstances, became the hero her country needed her to be. Recently, at the age of eighty, Marthe Cohn was awarded France's highest military honor, the Medaille Militaire, a relatively rare medal awarded for outstanding military service and given, in the past, to the likes of Winston Churchill. With this award came official acknowledgment of the heroic exploits of a beautiful young Jewish woman who faced death every day as she sought to help defeat the Nazi empire. When the spotlight was turned on Marthe Cohn, not even her children or grandchildren knew to what extent this modest woman had been involved with the Allies in fighting the evils of the greatest war of the twentieth century. She had fought valiantly to retrieve needed inside information about Nazi troop movements by slipping behind enemy lines, utilizing her perfect German accent andblond hair to pose as a young German nurse who was desperately trying to obtain word about a fictional fiance. In a present-tense narrative translated from the French, she re-creates her experience at age 24 in solitary confinement in the Ravensbruck women's prison bunker as news filters through that the Allies have landed in France. She remembers choking on the fumes from the nearby crematorium and witnessing prisoners beaten, murdered, and subjected to inhuman medical experiments. Even in the inferno, she's sustained by her Catholic faith and by the support of her friends among the inmates, who smuggle her messages and a shawl to keep her warm. What this account adds to the present flood of Holocaust memoirs are the glimpses the survivor provides of the various women prisoners and their roles in the French Resistance. We want to know more. Hazel Rochman A holocaust survivor and tireless advocate for the world's poor shares her personal journey from the Ravensbru+a5ck concentration camp to the French Resistance and eventually, a life led improving the lives of the poorest of the poor. 35,000 first printing. From Publishers Weekly Arrested in Paris in 1944 because of her work in the Resistance movement, the niece of the former President of France, General Charles de Gaulle, relates in this short, stark memoir how she was shipped to the Ravensbr?ck concentration camp in a cattle car when she was in her early 20s. Possibly because she was a political prisoner rather than a Jew, Anthonioz was not immediately exterminated, but was kept in a constant state of fear that every day might be her last. In spare but powerful prose, she documents the condition of the 75 Polish women in the camp who were operated on without anesthesia by a surgeon who later deliberately infected their wounds with gangrene, tetanus and streptococcus. Anthonioz herself was subjected to beatings and near starvation conditions. After several months of performing backbreaking labor, however, she was mysteriously transferred to an area of the camp where inmates were treated less harshly. Shortly thereafter, she was put in a solitary confinement cell. Since she did not know the reason for these changes, Anthonioz expected to be executed momentarily. What kept her from falling into total despair was the kindness of a fellow inmate, a Jehovah's Witness who brought her meals and gifts from other French prisoners. A few weeks after Paris was liberated, she was released from Ravensbr?ck. In the 1950s, Anthonioz, who is the founder of the international organization Aid in Total Distress, began her lifelong commitment to easing the plight of the poor. (Nov.) Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Library Journal An important addition to the growing list of Holocaust survival memoirs, this powerful book uniquely records the experiences not of a Jew but of a young Christian activist in the French Resistance, the niece of Gen. Charles de Gaulle. De Gaulle Anthonioz joined the Resistance as a teenager, was captured by the Germans in 1943, and then spent time in one of France's most notorious prisons before being shipped to Ravensbr?ck. There she remained until near the end of the war, mostly in solitary confinement. The power of this reluctantly penned memoir stems from its brevity and reflectiveness. Rather than recount daily events or routines within the camp, she explores the "progressive destruction of what constitutes a human being" and the cruelty of fellow inmates who became barracks chiefs. Although the memoir ends with the mysterious circumstances of her release, it should be noted that the author, sometimes called "the French Mother Theresa," has devoted her life to the Fourth World MovementAan international organization dedicated to helping the poor and homeless worldwide. This is part biography, part debunking of myths and part archive of accounts of the lives of Holliday and the Earp Brothers written from the time they were alive up to the present. Roberts is effective in evoking the influences that formed his subject's character. Born in Georgia in 1851, Holliday absorbed the manliness and rebelliousness instilled in young men of his prosperous class in antebellum Southern culture. Holliday also acquired expertise in drinking, whoring and gambling, as well as a taste for violence. Roberts is measured in evaluating the myths associated with Holliday's exit from Georgia and his nomadic life in Texas, Colorado and Arizona. This brings the author to Tombstone, and the fray featuring Holliday and the Earps against the Clantons and McLaurys. You can't beat this story for drama, and Roberts provides a step-by-step account of the gunfight. Some chapters are unduly packed with Roberts's massive research. But without it, the book would not have been what the author plainly intends-an omnibus of everything ever known, spoken or written about Doc Holliday. Photos not seen by PW. (Apr.) An omnibus of everything ever known, spoken, or written about Doc Holliday." -Publishers Weekly "An engagingly written, persuasively argued, solidly documented work of scholarship that will surely take its place in the literature of the Old West." -Booklist In Doc Holliday: The Life and Legend, the historian Gary Roberts takes aim at the most complex, perplexing, and paradoxical gunfighter of the Old West, drawing on more than twenty years of research-including new primary sources-in his quest to separate the life from the legend. Doc Holliday was a study in contrasts: the legendary gunslinger who made his living as a dentist; the emaciated consumptive whose very name struck fear in the hearts of his enemies; the degenerate gambler and alcoholic whose fierce loyalty to his friends compelled him, more than once, to risk his own life; and the sidekick whose near-mythic status rivals that of the West's greatest heroes. With lively details of Holliday's spirited exploits, his relationships with such Western icons as Wyatt Earp and Bat Masterson, and the gunfight at the O.K. Corral, this book sheds new light on one of the most mysterious figures of frontier history. From Booklist Doc Holliday, one of the most famous western gunfighters, died of tuberculosis at the ripe old age of 36. But he left behind him a legend so immense that, even with the addition of this effusively sourced biography, the truth about the man may never be known. There are a few facts: Holliday was a dentist, he became a gambler and a gunslinger, and he was involved in the infamous gunfight at the OK Corral. But around Holliday has been constructed (by scholars, by outlaw-turned-author Bat Masterson, and by various Hollywood moviemakers) a life story that is made up substantially of myth and misunderstanding. The real John Henry Holliday, according to Roberts, was "a man seen almost entirely through the eyes of others." Roberts' role here is a bit like that of a judge, examining the testimonies and deciding which witnesses to believe and which to discard. The result is an engagingly written, persuasively argued, solidly documented work of scholarship that will surely take its place in the literature of the Old West. Whether you believe spending a little regular time getting used to the idea that one day there will be no eyeballs in that skull of yours or you wish to avoid the unpleasant truth for now, picking up Barnes’s death ramblings might be as good a way to spend some of the time you have left as any.” -Edmonton Journal “A double-jointed performance in which Barnes lets his sharp, obsessive mind wander in search of some kind of meaning. . . . If he doesn’t come up with any answers here, he asks a lot of provocative and fascinating questions. Call him Mr. Meaningful.” -Ottawa Citizen “Barnes is neither depressed, nor depressing. He is honest and fantastically unconventional in discussing what is a matter of curiosity and concern to everyone who expects one day to die. . . . Death is inescapable and, in some manner to be revealed only at a later date, is approaching. If Barnes doesn’t make the prospect more palatable, he certainly makes it more stimulating.” -The Gazette About the Author JULIAN BARNES is the author of numerous books, for which he has received the Booker Prize, the Somerset Maugham Award, the E. As Rome’s first emperor, Augustus transformed the unruly Republic into the greatest empire the world had ever seen. His consolidation and expansion of Roman power two thousand years ago laid the foundations, for all of Western history to follow. Yet, despite Augustus’s accomplishments, very few biographers have concentrated on the man himself, instead choosing to chronicle the age in which he lived. Here, Anthony Everitt, the bestselling author of Cicero, gives a spellbinding and intimate account of his illustrious subject.Augustus began his career as an inexperienced teenager plucked from his studies to take center stage in the drama of Roman politics, assisted by two school friends, Agrippa and Maecenas. Augustus’s rise to power began with the assassination of his great-uncle and adoptive father, Julius Caesar, and culminated in the titanic duel with Mark Antony and Cleopatra. The world that made Augustus-and that he himself later remade-was driven by intrigue, sex, ceremony, violence, scandal, and naked ambition. Everitt has taken some of the household names of history-Caesar, Brutus, Cassius, Antony, Cleopatra-whom few know the full truth about, and turned them into flesh-and-blood human beings. At a time when many consider America an empire, this stunning portrait of the greatest emperor who ever lived makes for enlightening and engrossing reading. Everitt brings to life the world of a giant, rendered faithfully and sympathetically in human scale. A study of power and political genius, Augustusis a vivid, compelling biography of one of the most important rulers in history.About the AuthorAnthony Everitt, visiting professor in the visual and performing arts at Nottingham Trent University, has written extensively on European culture, has contributed to The Guardian and Financial Times, and is the author of Cicero. It lies at the southern edge of the Alban Hills, overlooking a wide plain and distant mountains. The walk from the railway station to the center is a steep, hot climb.Little remains of ancient Velitrae, but signs of the Renaissance are to be found everywhere. In the main square stands an old fountain with battered lions spouting water. The streets leading off the piazza are roughly parallel and are gridded, echoing the original pattern of the old Roman vici. At the town’s highest point, where the citadel must have been, a sixteenth-century palazzo communale, which combines the functions of town hall and museum, was built on the foundations of a Roman building. Here, on a stone platform, the modern life-size statue in bronze of a man in his late teens gazes blankly from empty eye sockets into the far distance, contemplating the life that has yet to unfold. This is Gaius Octavius, Rome’s future ruler Augustus: for Velitrae was his hometown and Velletri is proud to celebrate his memory.Gaius would recognize the lay of the land, the rise and fall of streets and alleys, perhaps the layout, certainly the views. Now as then, this is a provincial place, which seems farther from the capital city than it really is. Change has always come slowly. The community leaves a powerful impression of being self-contained and a little isolated. Even today, elderly locals squint blackly at strangers.A certain dour feeling for tradition, a suspicion of newfangled ways, a belief in propriety, have always been typical of provincial life in towns such as Velitrae, and it would be hard to imagine a more conventional family than that into which Gaius Octavius was born in 63 b.c.Every Roman boy received a p

"In loving yet unsentimental prose, Sy Montgomery captures the richness that animals bring to the human experience. Sometimes it takes a too-smart-for-his-own-good pig to open our eyes to what most matters in life.”-John Grogan, author of Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World’s Worst DogA naturalist who spent months at a time living on her own among wild creatures in remote jungles, Sy Montgomery had always felt more comfortable with animals than with people. So she gladly opened her heart to a sick piglet who had been crowded away from nourishing meals by his stronger siblings. Yet Sy had no inkling that this piglet, later named Christopher Hogwood, would not only survive but flourish-and she soon found herself engaged with her small-town community in ways she had never dreamed possible. Unexpectedly, Christopher provided this peripatetic traveler with something she had sought all her life: an anchor (eventually weighing 750 pounds) to family and home. The Good Good Pig celebrates Christopher Hogwood in all his glory, from his inauspicious infancy to hog heaven in rural New Hampshire, where his boundless zest for life and his large, loving heart made him absolute monarch over a (mostly) peaceable kingdom. At first, his domain included only Sy’s cosseted hens and her beautiful border collie, Tess. Then the neighbors began fetching Christopher home from his unauthorized jaunts, the little girls next door started giving him warm, soapy baths, and the villagers brought him delicious leftovers. His intelligence and fame increased along with his girth. He was featured in USA Today and on several National Public Radio environmental programs. On election day, some voters even wrote in Christopher’s name on their ballots. But as this enchanting book describes, Christopher Hogwood’s influence extended far beyond celebrity; for he was, as a friend said, a great big Buddha master. Sy reveals what she and others learned from this generous soul who just so happened to be a pig-lessons about self-acceptance, the meaning of family, the value of community, and the pleasures of the sweet green Earth. The Good Good Pig provides proof that with love, almost anything is possible. Review “I wasn’t sure what to expect when I picked up Sy Montgomery’s story of Christopher the pig. What I found was a charming, touching, funny, and ultimately very powerful tale of an extraordinary, even complicated pig and his impact on some very loving, perceptive, and extraordinary people. This story is heartwarming but packs a wallop.” -Jon Katz, author of Katz on Dogs “I love this book! It takes us into the world of one pig with such delicacy, such gentleness and yet such depth, that you will never be able to look a pig in the eye again without recognizing the unique person living within. You become somebody who sees why Sy Montgomery loved a pig beyond all measure.” -Jeffrey Masson, Ph.D., author of When Elephants Weep “Move over, Wilbur, there’s a new pig on the block. Sy Montgomery has conjured a pure classic for the animal lover’s soul. Poetic, insightful, funny, and deeply moving, The Good Good Pig is as hard to define as it is to put down. Who else but Sy Montgomery could introduce you to a hog and give you a such glimpse of heaven?” -Vicki Croke, author of The Lady and the Panda “This is a book not so much about a barnyard animal as about relationships, in all their messy, joyous, and heartbreaking complexity. In loving yet unsentimental prose, Sy Montgomery captures the richness that animals bring to the human experience. Sometimes it takes a too-smart-for-his-own-good pig to open our eyes to what most matters in life. The Good Good Pig is a good, good book, beautifully rendered and filled with wondrous surprises.”-John Grogan, author of Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World’s Worst Dog About the Author Sy Montgomery is a naturalist, author, documentary scriptwriter, and radio commentator who writes

From the New York Times bestselling author of Audrey Style comes a charming guide to Audrey Hepburn?inspired living for the modern woman Audrey Hepburn epitomized grace and style, not only in her appearance but in her very essence. His shot at redemption and making peace with the sport he loves was cut short by a near-fatal crash. A mechanical malfunction in mid-flight over the track's largest jump sent him spiralling into a nose dive. He had just enough time while airborne to say, "Survive, survive, survive."He broke his back and neck in six places, fractured his clavicle, sternum, and multiple ribs and collapsed his lungs. After flat-lining on the operating table four times, Brent's doctors finally managed to stabilize him. He required two blood transfusions, and his doctors feared the worst. He emerged from hospital a paraplegic, given only five to ten years to live due to various complications from his accident. After losing the sport he loved many years before to the seedy underworld of depression, alcoholism, drugs, and compulsive gambling, he vowed never to let go of his lifeline passion again. Brent meticulously takes us through his troubled journey to the eventual promised land where he now sits. Along the way, he recounts his many inspirational interactions with those who helped mould his character, including Rick Hansen on his Man in Motion tour as well as looking into Terry Fox's eyes on his Marathon of Hope. In keeping with his character as an avid sports and history enthusiast, Brent takes us back through many pertinent historical events that shaped his life and society as a whole. Two years after his accident, Brent was back at the track, this time to announce races rather than participate in them. Shortly after that, he launched the Canadian Moto Show, a live online talk-radio show, as well as a magazine, with his good friend Kevin Lefebvre. Throughout the process of giving back to the motocross community while also reinventing himself, he maintained a position as a senior writer at Motocross Performance Magazine. In 2016, he was nominated for a Coast Mental Health Courage to Come Back award. He continues to reshape his life within the sport he loves, refusing to let any of the formidable obstacles he has faced slow him down. This book is Brent's firsthand account of his journey, written in all five senses, with the hope that his story will motivate and inspire others to see that any seemingly insurmountable obstacles can be overcome.About the AuthorBrent Worrall is a multiple trauma and brain injury survivor, avid sports enthusiast, and former top-level motocross racer and hockey player. He collected many colourful achievements in his younger years, including being nominated for his hometown's athlete of the year, along with finishing tenth in the world motocross championship for his age group. Elaine Pagels looks to her own life to help address these questions. These questions took on a new urgency for Pagels when dealing with unimaginable loss-the death of her young son, followed a year later by the shocking loss of her husband. Here she interweaves a personal story with the work that she loves, illuminating how, for better and worse, religious traditions have shaped how we understand ourselves; how we relate to one another; and, most importantly, how to get through the most difficult challenges we face. She received the Whiting Award in 2018 and was named one of Granta’s Best of Young American Novelists of 2017. She holds an MFA from the University of Michigan and lives in San Francisco. Powerful, affecting essays on mental illness, winner of the Graywolf Press Nonfiction Prize and a Whiting AwardAn intimate, moving book written with the immediacy and directness of one who still struggles with the effects of mental and chronic illness, The Collected Schizophrenias cuts right to the core. Schizophrenia is not a single unifying diagnosis, and Esmé Weijun Wang writes not just to her fellow members of the “collected schizophrenias” but to those who wish to understand it as well. Opening with the journey toward her diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder, Wang discusses the medical community’s own disagreement about labels and procedures for diagnosing those with mental illness, and then follows an arc that examines the manifestations of schizophrenia in her life. In essays that range from using fashion to present as high-functioning to the depths of a rare form of psychosis, and from the failures of the higher education system and the dangers of institutionalization to the complexity of compounding factors such as PTSD and Lyme disease, Wang’s analytical eye, honed as a former lab researcher at Stanford, allows her to balance research with personal narrative. An essay collection of undeniable power, The Collected Schizophrenias dispels misconceptions and provides insight into a condition long misunderstood. Review “In Wang’s kaleidoscopic essays, memoir has been shattered into sliding and overlapping pieces. . . . The images and insights Wang summons are . . . often dazzling, and well worth the reconstructive work. . . . Her multifaceted arguments can be gratifyingly mind-expanding.”―The New York Times Book Review “There was no solution―this is the level of uncertainty, even hopelessness, that Wang lives with. And yet she perseveres, however imperfectly. It’s Wang’s ability to reconcile these opposing realities, to allow them to persist in contradiction, that feels most radical about her approach to being sick.”―The New Yorker“[An] utterly unique book of essays: a deep, illuminating, and explosively written dive into a life of living with mental illness.”―Entertainment Weekly“Drawing on scientific literature, pop culture, and her own experience, [Esmé Weijun Wang] discusses a range of conditions affecting some five per cent of Americans; her account of Cotard delusion, a belief that one is dead, is especially moving. . . . Fragmented by design, the book’s structure heightens the immediacy of its testimony.”―Briefly Noted, The New Yorker“Wang . . . is an implicitly trustworthy guide to this netherworld of psychosis and chronic illness. . . . Her characteristic nuance more often carries the ring of wisdom, hard won.”―The Washington Post “Wang establishes herself as a brave voice in the broader dialogue around mental health.”―TIME, Best Books of 2019“The Collected Schizophrenias is riveting, honest, and courageously allows for complexities in the reality of what living with illness is like―and we are lucky to have it in the world.”―NPR.org“Each searing essay . . . paints a vivid portrait of living with mental illness while female. . . . The haunting beauty of her prose anchors the collection firmly in place.”―Glamour “[The Collected Schizophrenias is] resoundingly intelligent, often unexpectedly funny, questioning, fearless and peerless, as Wang makes for brilliant company on 13 difficult walks through largely uncharted territory.”―Los Angeles Times “Intimate, urgent, and powerful. . . . This incorporeal being offers a feeling of hope, protection, and guidance, and leaves the person convinced he or she is not alone. There is a name for this phenomenon: it’s called the Third Man Factor. If only a handful of people had ever encountered the Third Man, it might be dismissed as an unusual delusion shared by a few overstressed minds. But over the years, the experience has occurred again and again, to 9/11 survivors, mountaineers, divers, polar explorers, prisoners of war, sailors, shipwreck survivors, aviators, and astronauts. All have escaped traumatic events only to tell strikingly similar stories of having sensed the close presence of a helper or guardian. The force has been explained as everything from hallucination to divine intervention. Recent neurological research suggests something else.Bestselling and award-winning author John Geiger has completed six years of physiological, psychological, and historical research on the Third Man. He blends his analysis with compelling human stories such as that of Ron DiFrancesco, the last survivor to escape the World Trade Center on 9/11; Ernest Shackleton, the legendary explorer whose account of the Third Man inspired T. S. Eliot to write of it in The Waste Land; Jerry Linenger, a NASA astronaut who experienced the Third Man while aboard the Mir space station—and many more.Fascinating for any reader, The Third Man Factor at last explains this secret to survival, a Third Man who—in the words of famed climber Reinhold Messner—“leads you out of the impossible.” About the Author John Geiger is the award-winning author of four non-fiction books, including the international bestseller Frozen in Time: The Fate of the Franklin Expedition. The debut album of his band, Blood Sweat & Tears, had won five Grammys and was on its way to selling ten million copies. But success had come at a steep price. The son of a tyrannical father, David left home at fifteen and became a street kid. He was still a teenager when he began serving time in prison, but fate intervened in the form of a battered guitar left behind by another inmate. David had found his calling. His move from Toronto to New York, where he joined the group that would forever change his life, would mark the turning point in an incredible journey filled with extreme highs and lows.Blood, Sweat and Tears is David’s story: a true rock saga as heartfelt as his songs. A story of grit, courage and determination-and above all, survival. Quill & Quire As the former frontman for the Canadian rock band Blood, Sweat & Tears, David Clayton-Thomas is no stranger to the spotlight. He has been inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and been given a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame. As if that weren’t enough, Clayton-Thomas can now add memoirist to his list of accomplishments.Clayton-Thomas opens his book with an introduction that prepares readers for a raw and honest account of his life. What follows is a highly personal and passionate description of child abuse, prison, poverty, artistic longing, and the price of success. His rise from the depths of Canada’s prison system to centre stage is an incredible story, one he relates in a voice that is sensitive and, at times, quite funny. Readers will also be drawn into the turbulent 1960s milieu, with its tales of drug binges in artists’ enclaves and shared moments with musical legends. While the memoir succeeds on that level, however, it fails entirely on another. Throughout the book, Clayton-Thomas takes the opportunity to settle decades-old scores with family, former business partners, and current members of BS&T. While readers should never expect a memoir to be wholly objective, many of the vitriol-laced rants in this book distract from the story and leave a bitter aftertaste. The book is also laden with contradictions, as Clayton-Thomas embraces his own life choices, then vilifies others for making similar choices. For fans of BS&T or Clayton-Thomas’s solo work, this memoir delivers the rawness and honesty that it promises. It sheds light on the darker side of the author’s life and the inspiration behind some of his music, but for casual readers, the enjoyment of the story is mitigated by the narrative’s anger and contradictions. The story of a nuanced character battling internal conflicts can make for fascinating reading, but watching Clayton-Thomas wrestle with his demons on the page is a lot less enjoyable than listening to him sing them out. Review “A remarkable story of redemption…. Clayton-Thomas writes with wry humour and grace in a straightforward style that’s as subtle as a split lip. The reader always feels he’s getting the straight goods…. The book deserves to be as big a hit as ‘Spinning Wheel,’ the best song Clayton-Thomas wrote for the jazz-rock outfit Blood Sweat & Tears…. His book is honest and unflinching. It reveals a man who is tough and cynical, funny as hell, but also vulnerable and insecure. Haunted by his violent childhood, Clayton-Thomas turned himself into a music legend-a singer and songwriter above all things. That’s worth much more than a standing ovation.” - Ottawa Citizen“David Clayton-Thomas has some skeletons in his closet, but he’s setting them all free and it feels mighty good…. A genuinely inspirational rags-to-riches story.” - Toronto Star“Clayton-Thomas[’s] memoir shows brilliance…. What’s critical for an autobiography is, first of all, a good story and Clayton-Thomas has one, for sure.” - Winnipeg Free Press“The David Clayton-Thomas book is an amazing roller coaster ride though the dreams and nightmares of a Canadia

NATIONAL BESTSELLERStephen Hawking has dazzled readers worldwide with a string of bestsellers exploring the mysteries of the universe. Lavishly illustrated with rarely seen photographs, this concise, witty, and candid account introduces readers to a Hawking rarely glimpsed in previous books: the inquisitive schoolboy whose classmates nicknamed him Einstein; the jokester who once placed a bet with a colleague over the existence of a particular black hole; and the young husband and father struggling to gain a foothold in the world of physics and cosmology. Writing with characteristic humility and humor, Hawking opens up about the challenges that confronted him following his diagnosis of ALS at age twenty-one. Tracing his development as a thinker, he explains how the prospect of an early death urged him onward through numerous intellectual breakthroughs, and talks about the genesis of his masterpiece A Brief History of Time-one of the iconic books of the twentieth century. Clear-eyed, intimate, and wise, My Brief History opens a window for the rest of us into Hawking’s personal cosmos. His grandfather-my great-grandfather John Hawking-had been a wealthy farmer, but he had bought too many farms and had gone bankrupt in the agricultural depression at the beginning of this century. His son Robert-my grandfather-tried to help his father but went bankrupt himself. Fortunately, Robert’s wife owned a house in Boroughbridge in which she ran a school, and this brought in a small amount of income. They thus managed to send their son to Oxford, where he studied medicine. My father won a series of scholarships and prizes, which enabled him to send money back to his parents. He then went into research in tropical medicine, and in 1937 he traveled to East Africa as part of his research. When the war began, he made an overland journey across Africa and down the Congo River to get a ship back to England, where he volunteered for military service. He was told, however, that he was more valuable in medical research. My mother was born in Dunfermline, Scotland, the third of eight children of a family doctor. The eldest was a girl with Down syndrome, who lived separately with a caregiver until she died at the age of thirteen. The family moved south to Devon when my mother was twelve. Like my father’s family, hers was not well off. Nevertheless, they too managed to send my mother to Oxford. After Oxford, she had various jobs, including that of inspector of taxes, which she did not like. She gave that up to become a secretary, which was how she met my father in the early years of the war.I was born on January 8, 1942, exactly three hundred years after the death of Galileo. I estimate, however, that about two hundred thousand other babies were also born that day.
