There are many readers in troubled marriages now who are looking for help, as well as people already invested in a relationship short of marriage who’d like help deciding if they should stick with it. People in relationships with Avoidants struggle with their lack of responsiveness and inability to tolerate real intimacy. Relationships between an Avoidant and a partner of another attachment type are the largest group of unhappy relationships, and people who love their partners and who may have started families and had children with an Avoidant will work very hard to try to make their relationships work better, out of love for their partner and children as well as their own happiness. The Avoidants in these relationships are more than likely unhappy with the situation as well-retreating into their shells and feeling harassed for being asked to respond with positive feeling when they have little to give. The other reason why so many people are looking for help on this topic is that it is an almost impossible problem. Couples counsellors rarely have the time or knowledge to work with an Avoidant and will often advise the spouse to give up on a Dismissive, especially, whose lack of responsiveness looks like cruelty or contempt (and sometimes it is!) Yet there is some hope-though it may take years and require educating the Avoidant on the patterns of good couples communication, if both partners want to change their patterns toward more secure and satisfying models, it can be done. How can you tell if your partner is avoidant? Does your partner: • Seem not to care how you feel? • Frequently fail to respond to direct questions or text messages? • Accuse you of being too needy or codependent? • Talk of some past lover as ideal and compare you to them? • Act coldly toward your children and the needy? • Remind you that he or she would be fine without you? • Withhold sex or affection as punishment? If that sounds familiar, then your partner is likely avoidant. At about 25% of the population, Avoidants have shorter, more troubled relationships, and tend to divorce more frequently and divorce again if remarried. What can be done? Individual therapy for the motivated Avoidant can move their default attachment style toward security, and to the extent that problems have been made worse by an overly clingy and demanding anxious-preoccupied partner, therapy can help there, as well. Partners who read and absorb the lessons of these books will have a head start on noticing and restraining themselves when they are slipping into an unsatisfying communications pattern, and an intellectual understanding of the bad patterns is a step toward unlearning them. Not all difficult Avoidants can be reformed; that depends on both partners, the depth of their problems, and their motivation and ability to change over time. But many troubled marriages and relationships can be greatly improved, and the people in them can learn to be happier, with even modest improvements in understanding how they can best communicate support for each other. For those reading who have not read Bad Boyfriends or are less familiar with attachment types, a beefed-up section on attachment theory and attachment types from Bad Boyfriends is included. Regular readers of JebKinnison.com will find edited versions of some relevant material previously posted there. As members of the Women’s Institute, an organization with a presence in a third of Britain’s villages, they ran canteens and knitted garments for troops, collected tons of rosehips and other herbs to replace medicines that couldn’t be imported, and advised the government on issues ranging from evacuee housing to children’s health to postwar reconstruction. But they are best known for making jam: from produce they grew on every available scrap of land, they produced twelve million pounds of jam and preserves to feed a hungry nation. Home Fires, Julie Summers’s fascinating social history of the Women’s Institute during the war (when its members included the future Queen Elizabeth II along with her mother and grandmother), provides the remarkable and inspiring true story behind the upcoming PBS Masterpiece series that will be sure to delight fans of Call the Midwife and Foyle’s War. Through archival material and interviews with current and former Women’s Institute members, Home Fires gives us an intimate look at life on the home front during World War II. Her first book, Fearless on Everest, published in 2000, was a biography of her great uncle, Sandy Irvine, who died on Everest with Mallory in 1924. Her grandfather, Philip Toosey, was the man behind the Bridge on the River Kwai and her biography of him appeared in 2005. Fascinated by how people cope with extreme situations, she has turned her attention on the effect of the Second World war on non-combatants - the women and children. Recently she published Fashion on the Ration, a book that looks at what we wore during the Second World War. From the Back Cover Some Christians effortlessly spend hours in contemplative prayer. Just being around them makes you wish you were that way. Or maybe you are that way, but others are far better at showing God's love in practical ways or courageously standing up for God's kingdom. Why can't you be like them? Maybe you weren't designed to be. This book explodes the barriers that keep Christians locked into rigid methods of worship and praise. Sacred Pathways unfolds nine distinct spiritual temperaments---their traits, strengths, and pitfalls. Illustrated with examples from the Bible and from the author's life experience, each one suggests an approach to loving God through a distinctive journey of adoration. In one or more you will see yourself and the ways you most naturally express your relationship with Jesus Christ. George and the Ship of Time Chapter One The spaceship landed on its backside with a huge crunch. It wobbled precariously for several minutes but managed not to topple over. Instead, it was wedged into the rocky ground at an angle like a spacey version of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Clouds of dust billowed around it. It would have been quite a sight-if someone had been there to see it. Around the ship, for miles and miles, stretched bleached, sandy ground, as empty as a lunar desert under a blistering milky sky. Inside the ship, the two astronauts stayed strapped in their seats as the rocking motion shuddered to a halt. “I feel a bit sick,” bleated Boltzmann, who hadn’t yet opened his eyes. “Don’t be silly,” said George. “You’re a robot, you don’t know how to feel sick.” “Yes I do,” protested Boltzmann. During his time in space with George, he had started to believe that he was not just an intelligent robot but a sentient one too. “I have feelings!” George, who preferred facts to feelings anyway, didn’t want to discuss Boltzmann’s feelings at that moment. “Is landing complete?” “Yes, thank you, Boltzmann!” replied his robot huffily. “Thank you, Boltzmann,” murmured George. “Interesting landing technique.” “We are on the surface of a celestial body. I call that landing.” “Not being funny,” said George, “but this is Earth, isn’t it?” “I think so,” said the robot, looking around. “But it’s hard to be entirely sure.” “What if it isn’t?” asked George. “What if you’ve landed us on the wrong planet?” As soon as he said it, he realized his mistake. On their long journey, Boltzmann had become more and more human in his reactions. Any hint of criticism made him very tetchy. “Look, I’ve done my best!” cried the robot. “After all, it’s because of you that we went into space in the first place.” “Yes, yes, I know,” sighed George. “And thank you for coming on the journey with me. I couldn’t have flown this spacecraft by myself.” “Oh shucks!” said Boltzmann, more happily. “I’ve never been allowed to spend so much time with a human before. It’s been most educational. As a robot, I never dreamed . . .” He paused. “Robots don’t dream,” he corrected himself. “I never thought that I would get the chance to have a human friend. And there is no other human I would have chosen. You are the best of your species, astronaut George.” Unexpectedly George felt a lump in his throat. “Aw, Boltz!” he said. “You’ve been the best of robots. No, actually”-he cleared his throat-“the best of friends, robot or human.” Boltzmann smiled, then reached over with his metal pincer hands and undid George’s straps. “Are we getting out?” “Yes!” said the robot. “I don’t know about you but I’m ready to stretch my legs!” “How are w

A housewife turned humorist, Erma Bombeck delighted America with a wry humor that turned everyday annoyances into familiar and funny anecdotes that won places of honor on America's refrigerators. Mehlman (modern foreign languages and literature, Boston Univ.) has undertaken an analysis of the 30 surviving scripts, attempting to use them to provide a greater understanding of Benjamin's rather difficult philosophy. The analysis permits some understanding of the writer's psyche, his challenges to fellow Jews (Mehlman is also the author of Legacies of Anti-Semitism in France , Univ. of Minnesota, 1983), and the bases of his literary criticism. A well-researched work of limited interest to those outside the field of literature. For academic libraries.- Ann Irvine, Montgomery Cty. P.L., Md.Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc. In light of the legendary difficulty of Walter Benjamin's works, it is a strange and intriguing fact that from 1929 to 1933 the great critic and cultural theorist wrote-and broadcast-numerous scripts, on the order of fireside chats, for children. Invited to speak on whatever subject he considered appropriate, Benjamin talked to the children of Frankfurt and Berlin about the destruction of Pompeii, an earthquake in Lisbon, and a railroad disaster at the Firth of Tay. He spoke about bootlegging and swindling, cataclysm and suicide, Faust and Cagliostro. In this first sustained analysis of the thirty surviving scripts, Jeffrey Mehlman demonstrates how Benjamin used the unlikely forum of children's radio to pursue some of his central philosophical and theological concerns.InWalter Benjamin for Children, readers will encounter a host of intertextual surprises: an evocation of the flooding of the Mississippi informed by the argument of "The Task of the Translator;" a discussion of scams in stamp-collecting that turns into "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction;" a tale of bootlegging in the American South that converges with the best of Benjamin's essays on fiction. Mehlman superimposes a dual series of texts dealing with catastrophe, on the one hand, and fraud, on the other, that resonate with the false-messianic theology of Sabbatianism as it came to focus the attention and enthusiasm of Benjamin's friend Gershom Scholem during the same years. The radio scripts for children, that is, offer an unexpected byway, on the eve of the apocalypse, into Benjamin's messianic preoccupations.A child's garden of deconstruction, these twenty-minute talks-from the perspective of childhood, before an invisible audience, on whatever happened to cross the critic's mind-are also by their very nature the closest we may ever come to a transcript of a psychoanalysis of Walter Benjamin. Particularly alive to that circumstance, Mehlman explores the themes of the radio broadcasts and brilliantly illuminates their hidden connections to Benjamin's life and work. This lucid analysis brings to light some of the least researched and understood aspects of Walter Benjamin's thought. It will interest and provoke literary theorists and philosophers of culture, as well as anyone who hopes to understand one of this century's most suggestive and perplexing critics. From Publishers Weekly Between 1929 and 1933 Benjamin, the German literary and cultural critic, wrote and broadcast a series of radio scripts for children, consisting of deceptively simple stories and fireside chats. He narrated tales about catastrophes--the destruction of Pompeii, the Lisbon earthquake of 1755, a Scottish railway disaster--as well as parables about fraud, including tales of philatelic forgeries and of mountebanks like Count Cagliostro, the 18th-century mystic who was revered as a saint. In a rigorous, dense scholarly study, Mehlman, professor of foreign languages at Boston University, persuasively argues that Benjamin's radio scripts for children--some 30 of which survive--reveal his preoccupation with the theme of a "false mes

From Simon & Schuster comes the autobiography of Rudy Galindo, U.S. Figure Skating champion. The U.S. Figure Skating champion reveals the personal and professional challenges that nearly destroyed his career, his difficult childhood in a violent neighborhood, his identity as a gay athlete, and his struggles with losing loved ones to AIDS. But that doesn’t mean that mathematics isn’t a crucial tool for understanding love. Love, like most things in life, is full of patterns. And mathematics is ultimately the study of patterns-from predicting the weather to the fluctuations of the stock market, the movement of planets or the growth of cities. These patterns twist and turn and warp and evolve just as the rituals of love do. In The Mathematics of Love, Dr. Hannah Fry takes the reader on a fascinating journey through the patterns that define our love lives, applying mathematical formulas to the most common yet complex questions pertaining to love: What’s the chance of finding love? What’s the probability that it will last? How do online dating algorithms work, exactly? Can game theory help us decide who to approach in a bar? At what point in your dating life should you settle down? From evaluating the best strategies for online dating to defining the nebulous concept of beauty, Dr. Fry proves-with great insight, wit, and fun-that math is a surprisingly useful tool to negotiate the complicated, often baffling, sometimes infuriating, always interesting, mysteries of love. The Mathematics of Love INTRODUCTION I’d like to begin with a confession: I am not an expert in love. I have never taken a course in psychology; I understand only the basics of human biochemistry; and my own dating history-much like everyone else’s-is a mixed bag of successes mingled with a healthy series of disasters. What I am, however, is a mathematician. And in my day job of teasing out and understanding the patterns in human behavior, I’ve come to realize that mathematics can offer a new way of looking at almost anything-even something as mysterious as love. My aim in writing this book is not to replace any of the other excellent sources available on the science of human connection. I wouldn’t be qualified to describe the intangible thrill, all-consuming passion, or world-ending despair that love can bring. If that’s what you’re after, might I recommend you simply turn to nearly every painting, poem, sculpture, or song created over the last 5,000 years. Instead, I want to try and offer you a different perspective on the most talked-about subject in the history of human existence, using mathematics as a guide. You would be forgiven for thinking that love and mathematics don’t seem to naturally sit well together. Human emotions, unlike mathematical equations, are not neatly ordered or well behaved, and the real thrill and essence of romance can’t easily be defined. But that doesn’t mean that mathematics doesn’t have something to offer. In the first volume, Isaac Sofer, a penniless painter in pre-Revolution Paris, left his fiancée, Alice, to seek his fortune at sea. In this second volume, Blain shows a man changed by his experiences returning home. He opens the book with Isaac stranded on a ship near the South Pole watching his pirate crew mates, mad with fever, slaughter each other. He manages to escape with Jack Ransom, the only other survivor. Jack and Isaac journey together through the Caribbean, cutting throats, robbing houses and chasing women. The innocence Isaac possessed in the first volume is now long gone; his life has become as crooked as his newly broken nose, and when he finally returns to Paris, Alice is gone. Blain's drawing appears cartoony at first, but on closer examination shows a deep portrayal of human emotion. The drawings' moody color and sketchiness add to the pall of darkness that fills the book, and Blain's landscapes convey all the squalor of the places Isaac visits. Blain's Isaac is an everyman who, exposed to the debauchery of the pirate life, willingly becomes an accomplice in the crimes he once shunned. (Mar.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. After a dicey life of women and drink on tropical isles fueled by robbery and deft pickpocketing, Isaac itches to be back home and find his love of so many years ago, Alice. While he reunites with his now much older father, Alice, and a ‘clean’ life, remain elusive.. From Booklist Blain continues his genuinely picaresque chronicle of a young man's adventures among thieves, thugs, and reprobates. Isaac didn't begin roguish, but then the voyage of exploration he joined ran into mutiny-inducing hardships in the Antarctic, and now, as this book opens, mutiny succeeds mutiny, or at least the shelf life of captains keeps shortening. Isaac can stay alive without becoming just another rogue for only so long. Meanwhile, the moral resolve of his fiancee, Alice, is weakening, too, and wealthy Philip's attentions become irresistible. As this installment of Isaac's story unfolds, he teams with a young sailor, Jack, and goes to boozing, wenching, and burglary when they get away from the ship and make their way back to Paris, where Isaac then leads a double life as, after reconciling with his father, a none-too-dutiful son by day and burgling gang member by night. All the while, he keeps his eye peeled for Alice, whom at last he spots in an aristocrat's coach. Blain's caricatural, chiaroscuro drawing style complements the story perfectly. Also set in Indiana near the Limberlost Swamp at the beginning of the 20th century, it tells the tale of Elnora Comstock, a young girl who is just entering high school at the outset of the novel. The story is one of Elnora’s emerging adulthood and her struggles: to overcome her poverty; to win the love of her mother, who blames Elnora for her husband’s death; to afford an education and a more secure future; and to find a romantic love of her own. Elnora is an admirable heroine, hard-working and diligent, respectful and resourceful. She collects moths and artifacts from the Limberlost to sell and uses the money to better herself and save for college. Like the rare moths she finds, Elnora too undergoes a transformation from a shy and reticent young girl into an intelligent and charming young lady, who earns the admiration of all she meets and eventually the love and acceptance she so desires. All rights reserved.WHY I WROTE THIS BOOKI wrote the book that I wished I had been able to read as I was building my own career. I want to help people get further, faster, and be more satisfied with their work. There were four real motivators for the book.1. TELL ALL THE SECRETSI was very fortunate to get a lot of help from smart people who cared about me along the way. Because of that, I was told a lot of important things that no one else was. Without executive-level, personal mentors, most people don't ever get to learn about what really matters and what really works. They don't learn how to avoid the common pitfalls or get the insights they need to survive the confusing and rough times. So I want to give away all the secrets-all the executive, insider information that is typically shared with only a select few people who get taken under a mentor's wing.2. I HATE WASTED TIMEI hate wasting anything, particularly time, energy, and potential. So I don't like to see people wasting time, investing their heart and energy, but not getting anywhere-and, in fact, burning career capital. You see, I am a maximizer through and through. What I mean by that is that I am driven to find the most direct and effective path to accomplish things and then do them the best they can be done, whether that is being a CEO or making a tuna sandwich. As such, I invest enormous amounts of time, thought, and energy to figure out how to do something an easier, faster, or better way. I refuse to let my time get burned up on things that don't make a big difference or have a significant payoff. So I've spent a lot of the last twenty-five years figuring out how to tune my actions and invest my efforts to maximize the payoff for the businesses and for my career.I know what works. I got there. All over the world, more and more people study at Western-style universities, work for Western-style companies, vote for Western-style governments, take Western medicines, wear Western clothes, and play Western sports. Yet six hundred years ago the petty kingdoms of Western Europe seemed like miserable backwaters, ravaged by incessant war and pestilence. It was Ming China or Ottoman Turkey that had the look of world civilizations. How did the West overtake its Eastern rivals? And has the zenith of Western power now passed? In Civilization: The West and the Rest, acclaimed historian Niall Ferguson argues that, beginning in the fifteenth century, the West developed six powerful new concepts that the Rest lacked: competition, science, the rule of law, modern medicine, consumerism, and the work ethic. These were the ‘killer applications’ that allowed the West to leap ahead of the Rest; opening global trade routes, exploiting new scientific knowledge, evolving representative government, more than doubling life expectancy, unleashing the industrial revolution, and hugely increasing human productivity. Civilization shows exactly how a dozen Western empires came to control three-fifths of mankind and four-fifths of the world economy.Yet now, Ferguson argues, the days of Western predominance are numbered because the Rest have finally downloaded the six killer apps the West once monopolized - while the West has literally lost faith in itself.Chronicling the rise and fall of empires alongside the clashes of civilizations, Civilization recasts world history with verve and wit. Boldly argued but also teeming with memorable characters, this is Ferguson at his very best.Review“[Ferguson] uses his powerful narrative talents in these pages to give the reader a highly tactile sense of history. … The author [has a] knack for making long-ago events as vivid and visceral as the evening news, for weaving anecdotes and small telling details together with a wide-angled retrospective vision” - New York Times“A dazzling history of Western ideas” -The Economist“Mr. Ferguson tells his story with characteristic verve and an eye for the felicitous phrase.” - Wall Street Journal“[W]ritten with vitality and verve… a tour de force.” -Boston Globe“This is sharp. It feels urgent. Ferguson, with a properly financially literate mind, twists his knife with great literary brio…Ferguson ends by suggesting the biggest threat is not China but ourselves - our cowardice, drawn from ignorance, even stupidity, about our past. He is right. But as he shows himself, that can be fixed.” -The Financial TimesAbout the AuthorNIALL FERGUSON is one of Britain's most renowned historians. He is the Laurence A. Cunning and autocratic, he feels no loyalty to America’s institutions and is distrustful of the influence Rapp and CIA director Irene Kennedy have in Washington.Meanwhile, when Kennedy discovers evidence of a mole scouring the Agency’s database for sensitive information on Nicholas Ward, the world’s first trillionaire, she convinces Rapp to take a job protecting him. In doing so, he finds himself walking an impossible tightrope: Keep the man alive, but also use him as bait to uncover a traitor who has seemingly unlimited access to government secrets. As the attacks on Ward become increasingly dire, Rapp and Kennedy are dragged into a world where the lines between governments, multinational corporations, and the hyper-wealthy fade. (Brave New World)[Carey is] unlike other Hollywood people. A brilliant raconteur. . . . By the end of the book, one feels one has lived in the surreal conditions of a Ford set on location, where grown men were treated like children. (Gary Wills)Carey shows the care, tedium, challenge, and exhiliration of filmmaking, and provides an intimate portrait of the great director at work and the actors and actresses, such as John Wayne, Henry Fonda, and Maureen O'Hara, who were part of Ford's vision of America. Includes a filmography and numerous b&w photos. (Reference and Research Book News)Since Ford remains the most honored U.S. picturemaker, arguably its finest as well, Carey's book is both a valuable treasure and a complete delight. (Peter Bogdanovich, Director of The Last Picture Show)Absolutely essential. (50 Westerns From The 50s)A great read for anyone who loves the classic and truly great western-a company of heroes indeed. (Filmwerk) When Harry Carey, Sr., died in 1947, director John Ford cast Carey's twenty-six-year-old son, Harry, Jr., in the role of The Abilene Kid in 3 Godfathers. Ford and the elder Carey had filmed an earlier version of the story, and Ford dedicated the Technicolor remake to his memory.Company of Heroes is the story of the making of that film, as well as the eight subsequent Ford classics. In it, Harry Carey, Jr., casts a remarkably observant eye on the process of filming Westerns by one of the true masters of the form. From She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and Wagonmaster to The Searchers and Cheyenne Autumn, he shows the care, tedium, challenge, and exhilaration of movie-making at its highest level. Carey's portrayal of John Ford at work is the most intimate ever written. He also gives us insightful and original portraits of the men and women who were part of Ford's vision of America: John Wayne, Richard Widmark, Henry Fonda, Maureen O'Hara, Ward Bond, Victor McLaglen, and Ben Johnson.Funny, insightful, and brutally honest, Company of Heroes is a rip-roaring good read that presents the remarkable life story of Harry Carey, Jr., and his many fine performances. About the Author Harry Carey, Jr., was born in Saugus, California. He appeared in over one hundred feature films and scores of television shows.
