But it isn't the monster Conor's been expecting-- he's been expecting the one from his nightmare, the nightmare he's had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments. The monster in his backyard is different. It's ancient. And wild. And it wants something from Conor. Something terrible and dangerous. It wants the truth. From the final idea of award-winning author Siobhan Dowd-- whose premature death from cancer prevented her from writing it herself-- Patrick Ness has spun a haunting and darkly funny novel of mischief, loss, and monsters both real and imagined. Review There's no denying it: this is one profoundly sad story. But it's also wise, darkly funny and brave, told in spare sentences, punctuated with fantastic images and stirring silences. Past his sorrow, fright and rage, Conor ultimately lands in a place - an imperfect one, of course - where healing can begin. A MONSTER CALLS is a gift from a generous storyteller and a potent piece of art.-The New York TimesA nuanced tale that draws on elements of classic horror stories to delve into the terrifying terrain of loss. . . . Ness brilliantly captures Conor's horrifying emotional ride as his mother's inevitable death approaches. In an ideal pairing of text and illustration, the novel is liberally laced with Kay's evocatively textured pen-and-ink artwork, which surrounds the text, softly caressing it in quiet moments and in others rushing toward the viewer with a nightmarish intensity.A poignant tribute to the life and talent of Siobhan Dowd and an astonishing exploration of fear.-Kirkus Reviews (starred review)Profoundly moving, expertly crafted tale... a singular masterpiece, exceptionally well-served by Kay's atmospheric and ominous illustrations... tackles the toughest of subjects by refusing to flinch, meeting the ugly truth about life head-on with compassion, bravery, and insight.-Publishers Weekly (starred review)A brilliantly executed, powerful tale.-School Library Journal (starred review)Ness twists out a resolution that is revelatory in its obviousness, beautiful in its execution, and fearless in its honesty. Kays artwork keeps the pace, gnawing at the edges of the pages with thundercloud shadows and keeping the monster just barely, terribly seeable.-Booklist (starred review)A masterpiece about life and loss that will stay with the reader long after the final page is turned.-Library Media Connection (starred review) About the Author Patrick Ness is the author of A Monster Calls, More Than This, The Rest of Us Just Live Here, and the critically acclaimed and best-selling Chaos Walking trilogy. As weeks turned to years, the disappearance became the most "extraordinary unsolved mystery" of its time. Everything about the sensational case would be called into question in the decades to come, including the motivations of his inner circle, his enemies, and the police who followed the trail across the continent, looking for answers in asylums, theatres, and the Pacific Northwest. In The Missing Millionaire, Katie Daubs tells the story of the Small mystery, weaving together a gripping narrative with the social and cultural history of a city undergoing immense change. Daubs examines the characters who were connected to the case as the century carried on: Ambrose's religious wife, Theresa; his long-time secretary, Jack Doughty; his two unmarried sisters, Florence and Gertrude; Patrick Sullivan, a lawless ex-policeman; and Austin Mitchell, an overwhelmed detective. A series of trials exposed Small’s tumultuous business and personal relationships, while allegations and confessions swirled. But as the main players in the Small mystery died, they took their secrets to the grave, and Ambrose Small would be forever missing. Drawing on extensive research, newly discovered archival material, and her own interviews with the descendants of key figures, Katie Daubs offers a rich portrait of life in an evolving city in the early twentieth century. Delving into a crime story about the power of the elite, she vividly recounts the page-turning tale of a cold case that is truly stranger than fiction. Review Shortlisted for the 2020 Arthur Ellis Award for Excellence in Crime Writing (Best Non-Fiction Book)Shortlisted for the 2020 Toronto Book Awards“Katie Daubs’s spirited new book, The Missing Millionaire is less a lament for the unsolved mystery of a petty, philandering, Machiavellian middleman than it is a vivid social and physical portrait of rapidly evolving Toronto.”-The Globe and Mail“This is an exceptional work of deeply researched historical non-fiction. Katie Daubs’s nimble storytelling takes us on a journey through Toronto’s often cantankerous past, uncovering forgotten details while bringing a century-old mystery and the characters involved vividly back to life. This book is an essential piece of Canadian history that will change the way you think of Toronto. And it’s all true.” -Shawn Micallef, author of Frontier City “This tale of money, power and betrayal at the dawn of the Roaring Twenties has all the ingredients of a classic murder mystery: a reviled millionaire, a sudden disappearance, feuding families and plenty of suspects with a motive to lie or to kill. Richly detailed, tenaciously reported and engagingly written.” -Dean Jobb, author of Empire of Deception “The Missing Millionaire is not only a lively and entertaining account of the unsolved mystery of theatre magnate Ambrose Small’s disappearance, it is a window into a century-old Toronto on the cusp of becoming a major metropolitan hub, and on how the pursuit of power and riches can lead so easily to ruin. Katie Daubs is a welcome addition to the narrative non-fiction landscape.” -Sarah Weinman, author of The Real Lolita “If you like mysteries and a page-turning picture of early 20th-century Toronto, when Orange (Protestant) and Green (Catholic) were significant dividing lines, The Missing Millionaire is for you. Katie Daubs’s buoyant prose moved me through a cast of characters that runs the gamut from charming scoundrels to spiritualists, women of easy virtue and nuns. Toronto-the-Not-So-Good has never been more entertaining.” -Katherine Ashenburg, author of Sofie & Cecilia About the Author KATIE DAUBS is a reporter at the Toronto Star. Today's problem, Steele forcefully argues, is not black oppression, but white guilt, a loose term that encompasses both an attempt by whites to regain the moral authority they lost after the Civil Rights Movement, and black contempt toward "Uncle Tom" complicity with white hegemony, resulting in a shirking of personal accountability. Steele makes a passionate case against the "Faustian bargain" he perceives on the left: "we'll throw you a bone like affirmative action if you'll just let us reduce you to your race so we can take moral authority for 'helping' you." But progressive readers will object to his assertion that systemic racism is a thing of the past-and to his praise of the Bush administration's philosophy on poverty, education and race. Though Steele takes a hard, critical look at affirmative action, self-serving white liberals and self-victimizing black leaders, he stops short of offering real-world solutions. (May) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. "Not unlike some of Ralph Ellison’s or Richard Wright’s best work. White Guilt, a serious meditation on vital issues, deserves a wide readership.” - Cleveland Plain DealerIn 1955 the killers of Emmett Till, a black Mississippi youth, were acquitted because they were white. Forty years later, despite the strong DNA evidence against him, accused murderer O. J. Simpson went free after his attorney portrayed him as a victim of racism. The age of white supremacy has given way to an age of white guilt-and neither has been good for African Americans.Through articulate analysis and engrossing recollections, acclaimed race relations scholar Shelby Steele sounds a powerful call for a new culture of personal responsibility. From Booklist Steele asserts that the primary focus of the civil-rights era was a legitimate quest to remove racial barriers. In the shift to the black-power era, Steele sees a paradigm shift, away from racial uplift and agency, where blacks assume responsibility for themselves, to a "race is destiny" mode. As the counterculture merged with the civil-rights movement, America was exposed for its racial hypocrisy and, consequently, lost its moral authority. Here, "white guilt" became the moral framework for America. Steele argues that liberal whites embraced guilt for two reasons: to avoid being seen as racists and to embrace a vantage point where they could mete out benefits to disadvantaged blacks through programs such as affirmative action. Steele believes blacks made a deal with the devil by exchanging responsibility and control over their destiny for handouts. He sees a deficiency in black middle-class educational achievement, further raising questions about claims of lack of equal opportunity. Despite these omissions, the cultural analysis of America's loss of moral authority for its exposed racism has resonance today. Vernon FordCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved Review “For those who do not already know, this elegant essay will show why Shelby Steele is America’s clearest thinker about America’s most difficult problem. Braiding family memories with an acute understanding of national policies, he demonstrates what went wrong when whites for their reasons, and blacks for theirs, embraced the idea that white guilt explains blacks’ problems and can be the basis of policies for ameliorating them.” - Newsweek“With his characteristic honesty, clarity and hard-won wisdom, Shelby Steele exposes the social hypocrisies and racial lies that transformed the once promising post-civil rights era into a period of cultural decadence and mediocrity. Rohr strips Christian faith down to the essentials, beyond glib answers and a "hand-me-down" experience of God, and points the way to true knowing. In this invigorating exploration, the tension between suffering and faith becomes a powerful means to an authentic, open connection with the divine.From the Back CoverThe ancient story of Job that grapples with the question of why there is suffering in the world even for those who lead a good and upright life has challenged, perplexed, and comforted readers for millennia. Here Richard Rohr shares his understanding of the book, both in its historical setting and as a most important message for today. The book speaks most strongly to those whose own world has fallen apart, but in its essence, it is a call to each reader to let go of old certitudes and goals and to place faith and trust radically in God alone. This book is a spiritual commentary and chapter-by-chapter Scripture study of the many themes that occur throughout the book. In this exploration many questions are raised as much about the reader's own life as Job's, and from this process is promised deeper understanding. In the course of the story, Job witnesses to the reality of pain, but also to gaining a new sense of joy and freedom and restoration of soul.About the AuthorN/A

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0647/1735/7290/products/51HVonNbxdL_cda291cb-3bfe-4a74-a1f2-daaedc9dc70e.jpg?v=1674788342
agents-of-influence-a-bri
Agents of Influence: A British Campaign, a Canadian Spy, and the Secret Plot to Bring America into World War II

Product Description The astonishing story of the British spies who set out to draw America into World War IIAs World War II raged into its second year, Britain sought a powerful ally to join its cause-but the American public was sharply divided on the subject. Canadian-born MI6 officer William Stephenson, with his knowledge and influence in North America, was chosen to change their minds by any means necessary.In this extraordinary tale of foreign influence on American shores, Henry Hemming shows how Stephenson came to New York--hiring Canadian staffers to keep his operations secret--and flooded the American market with propaganda supporting Franklin Roosevelt and decrying Nazism. His chief opponent was Charles Lindbergh, an insurgent populist who campaigned under the slogan "America First" and had no interest in the war. Joy is your birthright as a child of the God who delights in you and celebrates your existence. God approves of joy. It is what he made you for. Yet we live in a world at war against gladness. From our relationships, to our careers, to our health, to our hopes and dreams, a conspiracy of sorrow seeks to steal the joy that the Bible says is our strength. Life's struggles are real. But so is God's kingdom and his intention to fill our hearts to overflowing. In the midst of the daily grind, even in the face of heartbreak and mourning, joy is just a choice away. In thirty-one sensitive, insightful devotions, Dr. Charles Stanley explores the nature of joy through the lens of Scripture. In his personal, straightforward style, he speaks to the stuff of life we all contend with and shows us the Bible's path toward the heart of joy. Whether we're dealing with anger, or unforgiveness, or loss, or disappointment, God is able to turn our circumstances into gateways of blessing. Often, the blessing lies in getting God's perspective, not ours. A Touch of His Joy shifts our focus to the character and purposes of the One who stores our tears in a bottle, and in his own time, uses them to refract the light of his love into rainbows of blessing that delight our soul. Filled with beautiful, black-and-white photographs taken by the author in the Rocky Mountains, this devotional contemplates the joy that fills the creation Dr. Stanley's camera so poignantly captures. Eventually he left his life in science to study with Tibetan teachers, and he is now a Buddhist monk and translator for the Dalai Lama, living in the Shechen monastery near Kathmandu in Nepal. Trinh Thuan was born into a Buddhist family in Vietnam but became intrigued by the explosion of discoveries in astronomy during the 1960s. He made his way to the prestigious California Institute of Technology to study with some of the biggest names in the field and is now an acclaimed astrophysicist and specialist on how the galaxies formed.When Matthieu Ricard and Trinh Thuan met at an academic conference in the summer of 1997, they began discussing the many remarkable connections between the teachings of Buddhism and the findings of recent science. That conversation grew into an astonishing correspondence exploring a series of fascinating questions. Did the universe have a beginning? Or is our universe one in a series of infinite universes with no end and no beginning? Is the concept of a beginning of time fundamentally flawed? Might our perception of time in fact be an illusion, a phenomenon created in our brains that has no ultimate reality? Is the stunning fine-tuning of the universe, which has produced just the right conditions for life to evolve, a sign that a “principle of creation” is at work in our world? If such a principle of creation undergirds the workings of the universe, what does that tell us about whether or not there is a divine Creator? How does the radical interpretation of reality offered by quantum physics conform to and yet differ from the Buddhist conception of reality? What is consciousness and how did it evolve? Can consciousness exist apart from a brain generating it?The stimulating journey of discovery the authors traveled in their discussions is re-created beautifully in The Quantum and the Lotus, written in the style of a lively dialogue between friends. Both the fundamental teachings of Buddhism and the discoveries of contemporary science are introduced with great clarity, and the reader will be profoundly impressed by the many correspondences between the two streams of thought and revelation. Through the course of their dialogue, the authors reach a remarkable meeting of minds, ultimately offering a vital new understanding of the many ways in which science and Buddhism confirm and complement each other and of the ways in which, as Matthieu Ricard writes, “knowledge of our spirits and knowledge of the world are mutually enlightening and empowering.”“The Quantum and the Lotus is a mind-expanding, eye-opening exploration of the exciting parallels between cutting-edge thinking in physics and Buddhism-a scintillating conversation any thinking person would delight in overhearing.” -Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence“The Quantum and the Lotus is the rich and inspiring result of a deeply interesting dialogue between Western science and Buddhist philosophy. But her struggles do not end when she leaves her family at the age of thirteen to become a model. Honest and daring, Nearly Normal reveals the many ways that Cea’s unconventional childhood continues to reverberate through the years.At the age of thirty-seven, Cea has built a life that looks like the normal one she craved as a child-husband, young son, beautiful house, enviable career. But her carefully art-directed world is about to crumble around her. As she confronts the death of her still-young mother, the disintegration of her second marriage and the demise of her business, all within a few months, she finally faces the need to look at her past to make sense of her present.The Globe and Mail says “Person’s best gifts as a writer are her memory, her knack for knowing when to dig down into the finer details of a scene, and when to pull back.” Nearly Normal chronicles the many stories Cea left untold but that needed telling. Settled into a new and much happier life after the release of her first book, she is nonetheless compelled to continue searching for answers about her enigmatic family. It also challenges entrenched assumptions about abused trust, corruption and Establishment cover-ups that began with the Cambridge Five and the disappearance of Guy Burgess and Donald Maclean on the night boat to Saint-Malo in 1951.In a book that is as intellectually thrilling as it is entertaining and illuminating, Richard Davenport-Hines traces the bonds between individuals, networks and organisations over generations to offer a study of character, both individual and institutional. At its core lie the operative traits of boarding schools, the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, the Intelligence Division, Foreign Office, MI5, MI6 and Moscow Centre.Davenport-Hines tells many stories of espionage, counter-espionage and treachery. The second edition has much the same goal as the first: it provides updates on previously reviewed topics; introduces aspects of the study of depression that have become relevant more recently; and provides an historical perspective on depression research. The book is well organized and well written, and manages to be both informative and satisfying for the reader. ― Psychological MedicineThe second edition of Depression: Causes and Treatment should appeal to clinicians interested in the symptom presentation of affective disorders, the cognitive model, and various treatment considerations as well as to researchers interested in the biological underpinnings of depression as well as research contributions and limitations. . . . The second edition will assume the position of the first edition as one of the most authoritative texts on the topic. ― PsycCRITIQUESProduct DescriptionMore than forty years ago, Dr. Aaron T. Beck's pioneering Depression: Causes and Treatment presented the first comprehensive account of all aspects of depression and introduced cognitive therapy to health care providers and patients struggling with one of the most common and devastating diseases of the modern age. Since that classic text first appeared, the appreciation of the multifaceted nature of mood disorders has grown, and the phenomenological and biological aspects of psychology are increasingly seen as intertwined. Taking these developments into account, Beck and his colleague Brad A. Alford have written a second edition of Depression that will help patients and caregivers understand depression as a cognitive disorder.The new edition of Depression builds on the original research and approach of the seminal first edition, including the tests of Freud's theory that led to a new system of psychological theory and therapy, one that addresses the negative schema and automatic thoughts that can trap people in painful emotional states. Beck and Alford examine selected scientific tests and randomized controlled trials that have enhanced the cognitive approach since the time it was first introduced.Incorporating accepted changes in the definitions and categories of the various mood disorders into its discussion, Depression addresses the treatment role of revolutionary drugs, such as the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in relation to cognitive approaches. Beck and Alford explore research on neurotrophic and neurogenesis theories of depression. They also report on advances in psychosocial treatment of depression, including the value of cognitive therapy in the prevention of relapse.About the AuthorWinner of the Albert Lasker Award in Medical Science (known as "America's Nobel") and the Grawemeyer Award for Psychology, and recognized as the father of cognitive therapy, Aaron T. On Coruscant, the Senate watches anxiously as Supreme Chancellor Palpatine aggressively strips away more and more constitutional liberties in the name of safeguarding the Republic. Yoda, Mace Windu, and their fellow Masters grapple with the Chancellor’s disturbing move to assume control of the Jedi Council. And Anakin Skywalker, the prophesied Chosen One, destined to bring balance to the Force, is increasingly consumed by his fear that his secret love, Senator Padmé Amidala, will die. As the combat escalates across the galaxy, the stage is set for an explosive endgame: Obi-Wan undertakes a perilous mission to destroy the dreaded Separatist military leader General Grievous. Palpatine, eager to secure even greater control, subtly influences public opinion to turn against the Jedi. And a conflicted Anakin-tormented by unspeakable visions-edges dangerously closer to the brink of a galaxy-shaping decision. It remains only for Darth Sidious, whose shadow looms ever larger, to strike the final staggering blow against the Republic . . . and to ordain a fearsome new Sith Lord: Darth Vader. Based on the screenplay of the eagerly anticipated final film in George Lucas’s epic saga, bestselling Star Wars author Matthew Stover’s novel crackles with action, captures the iconic characters in all their complexity, and brings a space opera masterpiece full circle in stunning style. From Publishers Weekly Based on George Lucas's original screenplay and story, Stover's smart, efficient novelization isn't as humorous as the last of the Star Wars films, but it's packed full of stunning fight scenes, entertaining interludes with Obi-Wan Kenobi and delightful Yodaspeak ("Named must your fear be, before banish it you can"). Picking up where the movie left off, Stover (Star Wars: Shatterpoint) makes a heartfelt attempt at deepening the characterizations of Anakin Skywalker and his secret wife, Senator Padmé Amidala. Haunted by his failed attempt to save his mother's life and having a premonition of Padmé dying in childbirth, Skywalker chooses to serve Sidious, the Dark Lord of the Sith, in order to learn how to make his wife immortal. Sidious, who has been masquerading as the Republic's Supreme Chancellor Palpatine for many years, is determined, with the future Darth Vader's help, to destroy anyone who would defy him, including all Jedi and Separatists. Stover fills in the blanks regarding one of cinema's most fascinating villains with respect and relish, providing answers to such questions as why Vader looked so weird and how he became Luke's dad. The first edited collection to bring feminist, queer, and narrative theories into direct conversation with one another, this anthology places gender and sexuality at the center of contemporary theorizing about the production, reception, forms, and functions of narrative texts. Through twenty-one essays prefaced by a cogent history of the field, Narrative Theory Unbound offers new perspectives on narrative discourse and its constituent elements; on intersectional approaches that recognize race, religion, and national culture as integral to understanding sexuality and gender; on queer temporalities; on cognitive research; and on lifewriting in graphic, print, and digital constellations. Exploring genres ranging from reality TV to fairy tales to classical fiction, contributors explore the thorny, contested relationships between feminist and queer theory, on the one hand, and between feminist/queer theory and contemporary narratologies, on the other. When the text first appeared, as a two-part article in The New Yorker, its thesis seemed so radical and its irony so pitiless that journalists across the country reacted as if stung.Her book is a work of journalism as well as an essay on journalism: it at once exemplifies and dissects its subject. In her interviews with the leading and subsidiary characters in the MacDonald-McGinniss case -- the principals, their lawyers, the members of the jury, and the various persons who testified as expert witnesses at the trial -- Malcolm is always aware of herself as a player in a game that, as she points out, she cannot lose. The journalist-subject encounter has always troubled journalists, but never before has it been looked at so unflinchingly and so ruefully. Using a strange and unprecedented lawsuit as her larger-than-life example -- the lawsuit of Jeffrey MacDonald, a convicted murderer, against Joe McGinniss, the author of Fatal Vision, a book about the crime -- she delves into the always uneasy, sometimes tragic relationship that exists between journalist and subject. In Malcolm's view, neither journalist nor subject can avoid the moral impasse that is built into the journalistic situation. When we think of the typical heart patient, we imagine an older, grey-haired, overstressed man, but the face of heart disease has changed. Heart disease and stroke are now equal-opportunity killers. Despite the fact that heart disease kills more Canadian women each year than all forms of cancer combined, it’s not a problem that’s widely talked about. Dr. Beth Abramson is passionate about changing this by providing Canadian families with the knowledge to prevent, recognize and recover from heart disease. As a respected cardiologist and a national spokesperson for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, Dr. Abramson has spoken to doctors, patients and people across the country about the realities of heart health. Some of what she has to say is quite surprising, like the fact that there’s no real physical difference between a woman’s heart attack and a man’s, just a psychological difference in how we view them.Heart Health for Canadians is the definitive book on heart disease for the thousands of Canadian women and men who are diagnosed each year. It takes a full-spectrum approach to heart disease, covering prevention, symptoms, diagnosis, treatments, recovery, new research and alternative therapies. It educates Canadians on how to be better advocates for themselves and for their loved ones by offering support and guidance through our complicated healthcare system. And it offers more complete information on women’s heart health. You never want a family member to be diagnosed with heart disease; but if it happens, you want Heart Health for Canadians by your side. In the process of gently helping us sort things out, Bessey teaches us how to be as comfortable with uncertainty as we are with solid answers. And as we learn to hold questions in one hand and answers in the other, we discover new depths of faith that will remain secure even through the storms of life. Review “There are so many things that Ilove about this book and I know you will too. I love Sarah Bessey and true toform in Out of Sorts she is transparent, vulnerable, thought provoking,and gracious as she wrestles with things we have all wrestled with, or one daywill. Her message of hope, love, and grace is stunning and my heart resonatesdeeply with the thought that ‘we need each other, and we need to learn fromeach stream, because our stories don’t happen alone; our roots are all tangledtogether.’” -- Christine Caine, founder of The A21 Campaign and Propel Women"Honest, sober, and encouragingly relatable." -- Frank Viola, co-author of The Day I Met Jesus“This is the truth: Sarah is one of my very favorite writers. The quality of her writing is so inspiring and beautiful and moving to me. And her complicated dance with church and all its tentacles is one that is familiar to so many of us. I love this book.” -- Shauna Niequist, author of Bread & Wine“Sarah Bessey writes with the fire of a preacher and the soul of a mother, critical thought without cynicism. Her deepest wounds have come from the church and so has her deepest healing. This book is for all of us who understand, we wonderers who long for Jesus and distrust easy answers. Here Sarah is a brave and faithful guide as we all learn to ‘live the questions.’” -- Micha Boyett, author of Found“Touching a raw nerve in contemporary evangelical experience, Sarah Bessey reflects on the inevitable reality of walking the path of faith without having it all worked out-and at times having none of it worked out. Thoughtful, compelling, moving, and real, Bessey models a faith many are seeking but afraid to voice, a faith released of the obligation to be certain. This is the kind of book you’ll want to read and tell friends about.” -- Peter Enns, author of The Bible Tells Me So“Out of Sorts reads like a love letter to Jesus and to all those desperate to see His true face. It was easy to find oneself on the wrong side of the ruler-du-jour in 16th-century Italy, which was controlled by corrupt families and defended by contract soldiers whose loyalties were readily purchased. Machiavelli ventured into this world with his diplomatic acumen, then, when he fell out of favor, turned his ambitious mind to brutal political writings, satirical plays and the occasional courtesan. A theoretician of conspiracy and duplicity, he was also a brilliant observer of his times. Sympathizing with Machiavelli, King provides a convincing portrait of one of the most misunderstood thinkers of all time. Machiavelli's writings shed a dark light on the man, but less so when set against the tapestry of Florence's Palazzo della Signoria. King's book is everything a short biography should be and more, due to King's sharp wit and zesty anecdotes: As the document was being signed, a dove came through the window and flew over the heads of the Ten. The dove then crashed into a wall and fell dead at the feet of the Ten, but its appearance was still considered a good omen. It provides a strong sense of the history of both the man and his times and a nice introduction to Machiavelli's writings. Moreover, like one of Machiavelli's bawdy plays, it is a riveting and exhilarating read, full of salacious details and brisk prose. Product Description The Prince, Niccolò Machiavelli's handbook on power-how to get it and how to keep it-has been enormously influential in the centuries since it was written, garnering a heady mixture of admiration, fear, and contempt. Its author, born to an established middle-class family, was no prince himself. Machiavelli (1469-1527) worked as a courtier and diplomat for the Republic of Florence and enjoyed some small fame in his time as the author of bawdy plays and poems. Upon the Medici's return to power, however, he found himself summarily dismissed from the government he had served for decades and exiled from the city where he was born.In this discerning new biography, Ross King rescues Machiavelli's legacy from caricature, detailing the vibrant political and social context that influenced his thought and underscoring the humanity of one of history's finest political thinkers. Ross King's Machiavelli visits fortune-tellers, produces wine on his Tuscan estate, travels Europe tirelessly on horseback as a diplomatic envoy, and is a passionate scholar of antiquity-but above all, a keen observer of human nature. From Booklist Popular art historian King (Brunelleschi's Dome, 2000) here puts the ace diplomat of the Republic of Florence through the short-biography paces. Machiavelli was in office from 1498 to 1512, which forms the chronological backbone for King's profile. It supports the author's development of Machiavelli's personality, which will enlighten readers for whom his name is only the byword for political cynicism. He was certainly a Florentine patriot with imaginative ideas for the republic's foreign policy in the predatory arena of Renaissance Italy. But King's apt quotations from Machiavelli's correspondents indicate he possessed a tactlessness that created personal enemies, an indifference toward his wife but concern for his sons, and a zest for life and intellectual discussion that attracted many friends. King brings out these aspects of Machiavelli's character through discussion of his missions to heavy hitters such as the French king and the papacy, and through Machiavelli's life after the Medici pitched him into a torturer's dungeon. He survived to reflect about his experience of political power, and his historical footprints become a fascinating story in their own right in King's highly readable portrait. A place where the gods of the game battled for the biggest prize in club football; a place where the likes of Di Stéfano, Eusébio, Best, Cruyff, Beckenbauer, Dalglish, Gullit and so many others became legends, as they skated across thin ice to glory, in the colours of clubs that are now considered European royalty. An entirely different beast than the Champions League, it was a competition where you had to win your domestic league title to gain entry. With no safety net of group stages, one bad night of football was enough to send you back to square one. In contrast to today's Champions League winners - whose status as Europe's best team is regularly disputed - the winners of the European Cup truly were the undisputed kings of Europe.
