Designed as an interceptor in a world focused on the possibility of nuclear war, the CF-104 earned the unfortunate nicknames Widowmaker" and "Lawn Dart" for the number of planes that crashed by accident. The most famous such accident was that of Captain B. B. Reid, who crashed into a mountain after accidentally wandering into area 51 during a training exercise. Eventually most of Canada's planes were sold to Turkey.
